This Friday’s Track (I’m Not Proud Of)
Well, that’s a misleading title, because I am proud of this weeks song. I poured quite a bit into this one, it’s a little autobiographical and a little fictional – I’ll let you decide which parts are which. Something different, something new, happened while writing this song. I grabbed my guitar and just played some chords, then starting singing a melody with thoughts that had been on my mind for awhile. I got around to the second verses and was tearing up by these lyrics I had written. I knew this would be an emotional song for me right then.
The actual recording took longer that usual, even though it’s not too complex a song. I wanted it to be simple, yet grasping, and I feel it does that. The guitars are simple, but full, and with a nice guitar line that sticks out. My vocals were troublesome… I didn’t know whether I should’ve sang it softly or with a rasp, my roommate , Connor, liked the harsher feel but I felt it should be a bit cleaner. I tried to get a nice balance. Finally, I thought it needed something else. A nice chime seemed to please me.
My production standards, in my humble opinion anyways, are getting more and more advanced, cleaner, bigger, and just better overall. It’s still hard to get the sound I want from my bedroom studio, but it’s all I can do right now – the actual studio is getting harder and harder to get into these days. I need some acoustic treatment, among other things, unfortunately that involves having something that I don’t. Money.
Unfortunately, we can’t all get what we want.
In Other News:
This weekend should be a lot of fun, some friends moved out to the island (Vancouver, if you didn’t already know) and I’m heading out there today to spend the next couple days. I haven’t been to the island (again, Vancouver, if you forgot) since I was a wee lad (and apparently Scottish). I don’t remember much, except for the ferry ride, which I’m completely excited for! Going to bring some pennies and put them in that ‘squish-penny(tm)’ machine. Do they still have those? I hope so! I’ve been hoarding all my pennies since they took them out of circulation – just for those dang flatten penny machines!!
In Other Other News:
School is almost over. Crunch time is near. MONSTERS is getting worked on. Excited? I am. It’s been a fun EP to make hopefully fun to listen to, and should be out by the end of July, if all goes well! Speaking of paying money for things (Segues, am I right?), how much would you buy an EP from yours truly for? $5? $10? $50??? Oh my goodness you flatter me!! All kidding aside, this will be a free download with an option to pay, because I know how hard it is to put your credit card number into the computer and make some clicks. I really do.
